about
Written by Ben Garnett
The first movement of a longer arrangement and re-imagination of the jazz standard “What Is This Thing Called Love?”. I wrote the arrangement for guitar and an unusual string quartet: two violins (one (Brittany’s) having a fifth low C-string), cello, and bass. While I found that having the added low-end of both a cello and bass made for a deeper temperament in the music, it became tricky to then add an acoustic guitar, which tends to occupy a lot of the same range as the aforementioned instruments, with regard to coordinating the overall balance of the low register. So challenging in fact, I decided not to play guitar on the first movement! I think of this piece as an interlude, not only to set the stage for the second movement (track 10), but for the “B side” of the album.

I've had a mad crush on Natalie Haas's music from the moment I first heard it. To hear both sisters playing together - well, it's a no brainer! If you enjoy folk cello, for want of a better term, just buy this. You won't reget it :-) Joseph Karl

It's just impeccably done. And, it doesn't have vocals, which means it's easier to listen while I work. :)
Last One on the Line is just amazing. I would love to hear more from this group. meatnordrink

This is just absolutely beautifully arranged instrumental ...bluegrass? Which is sooo hard to find. The instrumentation is lush and the attention to detail exacting. Possibly my favorite find this year.
So hard to pick a favorite track. meatnordrink
